- Rhodesian Spotlight synopsis: Journalists see progress at Salisbury’s new million and a quarter Airport.
Rhodesian Spotlight Commentary - To see how work is progressing on Salisbury’s new million and a quarter pound Airport, due to come into use on July the first, a group of journalists were invited along by Mr J. H. Durr. Mr Durr who is Commissioner of Roads gave an outline of the methods that are cutting costs so that it will be one of the cheapest air terminals in the Southern half of Africa. Careful and detailed planning is the key to this economy, but even so it is a huge project. One of the largest items is concrete, not only in the terminal buildings which will provide every facility, but also in the large concrete apron necessary to withstand the warming up of jet engines. Designed to take any aircraft in the world with plenty to spare, the long macadamised runways are being laid mechanically.
Concrete pipes are spun on the spot to be used for drainage, another time and money saver. A further feature to aid safe flying is Radio Telephone. This in itself is a considerable undertaking but technicians have the installation ahead of schedule. There’s no doubt that Salisbury is getting an international Airport that it can be justifiably proud of. - Keywords
