Summary
Rhodesian Spotlight synopsis: The Marquess of Salisbury receives the Freedom of the City of Salisbury which took its name from his Grandfather.
Rhodesian Spotlight Commentary - In Salisbury’s Town House, a Civic Ceremony has an interesting historical background. In 1890 the town of Salisbury was named after Lord Salisbury who was then the British Prime Minister. Today the Mayor has the honour of bestowing the Freedom of the City upon the Most Honourable the Marquess of Salisbury, the grandson of the man after whom the city was named. The Marquess of Salisbury is Leader of the Government in the House of Lords and Lord President of the Council. The honour was bestowed upon him for his outstanding services to the British Commonwealth.
The Marquess of Salisbury visited the Chindamora Native Reserve where he saw the Government’s successful encouragement of African Agriculture. Tobacco is a big crop and Lord Salisbury talked to experts and to Chief Chindamora himself. He also saw the improved native housing - further evidence of a raised standard of living.
