Summary
Rhodesian Spotlight synopsis: The Federal Sailing Regatta at Palm Beach, and a flying visit to Monkey Bay by air of Sea Scouts.
Rhodesian Spotlight Commentary - Palm Beach on Lake Nyasa is the venue of the first Federal Regatta organised by the Ndirande Sailing Club. Boats competing are from Nyasaland, Northern and Southern Rhodesia, and are made ready on the beach. Extremely high winds played havoc with many of the boats, and several came to grief. It was certainly speedy yachting and fun while it lasted. Coming home right side up was quite a feat. It was Southern Rhodesia who came out on top winning both major events - the Malcolm Harry Trophy and the Copper Bowl.
Also visiting Lake Nyasa - this time at Monkey Bay, was a Pretoria detachment of Sea Scouts. One aircraft was piloted by Sea Scouts David Shaw and Wally McLeod, a second by International Scout Commissioner Geoff Hussey. Having visited Lourenco Marques and Beira, they called in at Monkey Bay before going on to Kariba and Livingstone. Looking over the Hydrographic Survey launch Edmund Rhodes, they were in their element as Sea Scouts, but soon their stay was over and the aircraft were made ready again. Just before everything was stowed aboard, Wally McLeod and Hans Schapers, who is still too young to get his wings, were working out a flight plane. Through out the entire tour both aircraft flew to schedule. Geoff Hussey carried out a pre-take off inspection, and finding everything correct, away they went. A happy troop of Scouts on an airborne Jamboree.
