NoS Summary - Processes involved in harvesting Esparto Grass in Geryville, Northern Africa.
British Pathe synopsis: "Esparto Grass, to be precise, from distant parts of Northern Africa." L/S of a port. Boats in foreground, very built up area on the shore. High angle shot of a valley. "We are crossing the Atlas Mountains en route for the great Grass lands beyond Geryville." L/S of the landscape - man riding a mule moves towards camera. C/U of a man’s arm. He has a cutting tool attached to his wrist by a rope. C/U of grass being cut by hand. L/S of group of workers in a field cutting the grass - "The heart of esparto-land, where men are Sheiks, and if they don’t like the way their wives work, say so with half a brick." L/S of what looks like the foreman throwing something at one of the workers. C/U of women cutting the grass. M/S of the workers moving across the landscape as they work. "Camels for the dump - (with the hump.)" L/S of camels moving across the landscape. L/S of workers gathering the grass. "Having reached H.Q. any roots are eliminated." M/S of women working at a large outdoor table. They place NoSles of grass on the table and sort through it. M/S of woman pulling off roots. "Ropes for the baling are made by youthful experts." Young boys work at primitive machines which spin the grass into ropes. The boys look to be about 7 or 8 years old. Various shots of them at work. "The power of the Press - an esparto version, in bales - (and one-Mule-Power.)" L/S of a Mule being whipped so that it will pull a press. M/S of a man working at a machine which compresses the straw into bales. "And so to the great dumps at Oran - where they sometimes have over 10,000 tons in storage." Nice L/S of many bales being rolled past the camera.
