NoS Summary - traditional methods of totem pole wood carving.
British Pathe synopsis: "Long before the advent of the White man, wood carving was an art in the far corners of Northern Canada - " M/S of a large tree trunk laid out on the ground. Some of the wood has been cut away - a carving is taking shape. C/U of carver working on the piece - a totem pole. Various shots of the man carving the face of a Native American Indian into the wood. M/S of him chipping away at the wood. "Today, the Indian Totem Pole carvers are almost gone, but not forgotten - One or two still carry on." C/U of the man carving the wood and blowing away the chippings. C/U of man showing his tools to the camera - they look quite primitive. L/S of the man at work - varnishing or painting the totem pole. "Super carvers - writing in wood the tribal stories" M/S of man painting a carved animal figure on a pole. L/S of carver standing beside his totem pole, he looks up and the camera tilts to show the top of the pole.
