Summary
COI synopsis: The microchip is changing the face of industry. But the microchip is also enriching our society - helping to move traffic smoothly through our towns, to explore new areas of design and to guide great airliners more efficiently and with greater safety all over the globe. Why do traffic jams occur? When and how frequently do they happen? If we can understand that, perhaps we can solve traffic flow problems without disrupting communities. A British engineer has collated a great deal of information about traffic and written it into a computer. In his office, he plays computer games. He can immediately see the effect each of his ideas has on the traffic flow. The community remains intact until he and the computer have devised the best solution.
