Summary
COI synopsis: Huge increases in the volume of air traffic pose problems, of logistics and safety, for the airports of the world. This programme looks at some of the new technological aids in use at airports like London’s Heathrow, which help to maximise efficiency and minimise risk. The size of today’s giant airliners - particularly their tail sections - far outstrips hangar space originally designed for smaller aircraft. Now a new mobile "dry dock", incorporated into existing hangars, completely encloses the tail, providing instant access to the plane for vital servicing and maintenance.
