Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Kirkstall Forge Colour. DESCRIPTION: Cistercian monks founded Kirkstall Abbey in the twelfth century. Their primitive mining and smelting of Iron from the rich Yorkshire deposits was the start of an unbroken chain of industrial development - which has lasted eight hundred years. Through the Middle Ages and up to the industrial revolution; the arrival of the railway and the development of motor transport, the Forge has survived - and thrived. Firmly linked to the past, and fired with enthusiasm for the future. SHOTLIST: GV ruins of Kirkstall Abbey. CU sign Kirkstall Abbey. GV ruins. SV ruins of Abbey’s forge, pan to water wheel. CU zoom out to TV model of new forge. GV castings on factory floor. CU tilt castings on rack. SV white hot piece of iron is taken out of furnace with tongs pan as it is taken over to press. SV press comes down onto iron and presses out a wheel hub. CU flame from furnace. SV flaming castings, press comes onto it 3 times. SV iron rod taken from furnace. SV rod in press - press comes down on it 5 times. SV man at computer in computer control room. SCU hand pushes buttons to start information running, pan down to revolving programming tape. SV lathe in operation. CU metal in lathe being worked. CU engineer. CU wheel hub being turned on lathe. CU stack of lorry axles pan up to SV axle turning on lathe. CU axle turning on lathe. CU machine operator’s face. CU axle being shaped on lathe. SV 2 men set up finished rear axle, complete with brake shoes etc. ready to be tested. CU drive shaft rotating at differential zoom out to SV hubs rotating. CU hub rotating zoom out to SCU. LV white hot iron in press, press comes down once. SV ditto. SCU red hot hub is taken from press. SV pan as hub is put into box with other red hot hubs.
