- Summary
- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Going It Alone. DESCRIPTION: The withdrawal from the Commonwealth of that great country, the Union of South Africa, makes May the 31st a day for deep regret. Looking back only 14 years, all seemed set fair, when the Queen (the Princess Elizabeth) toured the country. South Africa has owed allegiance to her as Queen, until May the 31st, the date chosen to become a completely Independent Republic. Dr Verwoerd is the Nationalist leader to-day. In spite of serious injuries, he survived an outrageous attempt on his life. He survived to lead his country into an unpredictable future. Apartheid remains, rigidly enforced. There are over 12 million Africans to 2_ million white people. The shooting at Sharpeville, in which many Africans died, shocked the world. It is evidence of the dangers of the situation.
