Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Proteus Protest. DESCRIPTION: Keeping an eye on Holy Lock in the Clyde, and camping at Graham’s Point (opposite the berthing-place of Proteus) were half a dozen Polaris objectors. It was believed they aimed at getting in the way, when the American ship came in. Proteus, of-course, is the depot ship for polaris-carrying submarines due to be based here. The 18,000 ton vessel is seen being manoeuvred into position. The polaris objectors turned up in canoes. There were launches on the spot to keep them off, and some of the canoes got swamped. Presently, coming ashore from Proteus, her commander, Captain Laning, was on his way to a civic welcome at Dunoon. Now came the start of another protest: people arriving from Gourock at Dunoon, were joining a ban-the-polaris demonstration march with numerous banners and slogans. SHOTLIST: Key scene. LS Proteus.
