- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Report From Algeria. DESCRIPTION: It started with the arrival of President de Gaulle on what was planned to be a 5-day tour of Algeria. At one place after another, he moved freely among the crowds of Muslims, who greeted him warmly. But the other side of the story was to be seen in Algiers itself, and trouble was not long in breaking out. Fanned by rebel agitators, hostility to the French Government, and, even more, to the Colons, or French settlers, now found expression in mounting disorder, riot and violence. Algiers became a battle ground, and police, reinforced by troops, fought to restore order in what was nothing less than civil war. Casualties mounted, and, after several days of violence, during which the security forces had been forced to open fire, the death-roll was reported as over 90.
