Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Congo Trouble. DESCRIPTION: Congolese Premier Mr Lumumba spoke of unity, solidarity, co-operation, at a conference of 11 African nations in Leopoldville. The conference took place in The Palace of Culture, but just outside it, culture was conspicuous by its absence, for a large crowd had been clamouring for the death of Mr Lumumba. Troops and police went into action against the demonstrators, pretty brutal action, too, with half a dozen men arresting individuals, and beating them up. While this was going on in Leopoldville, savage fighting was reported from the break-away province of Katanga. SHOTLIST: GV Palace of Culture. LS flag. LS troops clash with demonstrators. MS troops arresting demonstrators. GV demonstration (Katanga). MS placard and banners. MS rioting begins.
