Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Ready for Rome England V France. DESCRIPTION: Two day of International Athletics at White City, and a walk-over for the British girls who completely outclassed the fair sex from France. The 100 metres was an example. Dorothy Hyman, Britain’s top sprinter at the moment, was a second ahead of France’s record holder. The Men’s ten thousand metres was won by a young French schoolteacher, Robert Bogey, who set a new all-comers record in 29 minutes, 1.6. Morriman (Britain) came a very close second. Mary Bignall, Sportswoman of 1959, scored the winning Long Jump, but she only came second in the 80 metres Hurdles. So the the Men again. It was Peter Radford who won the 100 metres. The 5,000 metres was a highlight of a meeting in which Britain beat France by 21 points. Constantly changing places, Gordon Pirie, 2, and Frank Salvat, 4, against Bernard and the Bogey man. Gordon Pirie won this race by 30 yards. SHOTLIST: Athletes marching round track. French competitors. Start of 100 metres. CU starter. 100 metres race won by Dorothy Hyman. CU the winner.
