Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Canadian Royal Tour. DESCRIPTION: St John’s, Newfoundland. The foggy weather cleared just in time for the BOAC Comet IV to land at Torbay Airport where the Queen and Prince Philip were received by Mr Massey (the Governor-General) and Mr Diefenbaker, the Prime Minister. Then, little Dale Smallwood, granddaughter of Newfoundland’s premier presented a bouquet to the Queen. Her Majesty’s first engagement was Corner Brook on the Western coast. The Paper Mill here, is one of the largest in the world. Next, to an iron-ore mining centre in Northern Quebec. At Schefferville, members of Indian tribes assembled to pay their respect to the Queen of Canada. Later, by air to the iron-ore shipping port of Seven Islands, where the Queen and the Prince looked down on Britannia, waiting their arrival. The royal yacht was to take them to fulfil a number of engagements on their way up the St Lawrence before the highlight of this part of the tour: the opening of the Seaway. There was a big send-off at Seven Islands, as the yacht left to cross the great river to Gaspe. SHOTLIST: CU Royal Emblem (key). GV pan St John’s Newfoundland. GV same. LS Comet taxies. Closer same.
