Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Meeting of National Assembly. DESCRIPTION: There was an emergency meeting of the National Assembly in Paris. The Premier, Pierre Pflimlin, stressed the gravity of the events in Corsica and the threat of civil war in France. At Colombey Les Deux Eglises, reporters waited for news: the visit to General de Gaulle paid by Monsieur Pinay. In Algeria, great crowds of French settlers and Muslims continued to gather in streets and squares, to listen to speeches and cheer their leaders. They are convinced that General de Gaulle can lead them to security, under the Free French symbol, the Cross of Lorraine. Back to Paris: nothing had yet happened to dim the brilliance of the Capital. SHOTLIST: Addressing an emergency session of the National Assembly, French Premier Pierre Pflimlin warned today: We are threatened by Civil war. It would subject us not only to a humiliating defeat in North Africa but also would destroy our basic liberties. Pflimlin addressed the Assembly amid an atmosphere of deepening gloom and crisis. Exterior shots of the National Assembly, then interiors, with Premier Pflimlin speaking to the deputies. SOUSTELLE IN ALGIERS - CARD 73867 M Jacques Soustelle at the Algiers War Memorial. Accompanied by General Salan and General Allard, & General Johaud. Mr Soustelle laid a wreath at the memorial. On the same afternoon, a big crowd of Moslem women went to the Forum, located in Algiers in front of the Algiers Ministry. Mr Soustelle made a speech. GOOD LIVING IN PARIS - CARD 73880 Many foreign newspapers are describing the ‘black’ situation in Paris, under the state of emergency. Mr Pflimlin had decided on a few unpopular measures, such as cuts of foreign currency allowances & new taxes on luxurious articles. But these measures have on the whole little effect on the Parisians’ life. Food supplies arrived on the markets as before. Restaurants, coffee houses, night clubs, theatres & dances are all full up. Shots in film - night.
