MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: The New Era. DESCRIPTION: Calder Hall, in Cumberland and the opening of the first large-scale atom power station in the world. The Queen performed the ceremony of the big switch-on. Sir Edwin Plowden presented Viscount Waverley, one of many contributors to atomic energy development. Later, at Workington’s Steel Works, one practical application of Calder Hall’s production of electricity was inspected. Within the span of a few generations our way of life has been transformed beyond anything our forefathers could have imagined. And I hope this occasion will be an inspiration and encouragement to all who will continue this exciting enterprise here and elsewhere.
