MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Britain’s Victory in Marathon at Brussels. DESCRIPTION: Prince Baudouin declares open the European Games in Brussels. The first victory was won by Miss Andreeva, a Russian weight-putter. A Russian was third in the marathon, but this was won by Jack Holden, 43 year old British veteran. It was run over a distance of 26 1/2 miles. SHOTLIST: KS. GV stadium. Prince Baudouin takes his seat, next to Lord Burghley. Nations parade round course, cut-in of Russian competitors. Russian competitors in putting the weight, Miss Andreeva throws & won. Javelin throwing - Miss K Tothenova of USSR throws javelin (Madame Smelnitzkaia throws javelin - she won). Start of marathon, leaving stadium. Marathon runners on road, followed by many followers on cycles. Cut-ins of Holden No 317, Karvonnen No 177 - Finland. Vannen No 864 - USSR. Holden enters stadium first & puts on a spurt to win, passing through the tape.
