Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Records Broken in Channel Race. DESCRIPTION: At Cap Gris Nez there was great excitement for the start of the Daily Mail Channel Swimming Race. The favourite, Frenchman Roger Le Morvan indulges in an early morning shave, and after the start begins to justify his position. A serious challenger later on is Hassan Abd El Rehim, one of three contenders from Egypt, who takes the lead and lands at Dover 12 minutes ahead of Le Morvan - both breaking the existing record. Eileen Fenton, a Dewsbury girl, is the first woman to land, having finished with a right arm out of action. SHOTLIST: KS. Cameraman being "pick-a-back" ashore from rowing boat at Cap Gris Nez. Night material - competitors carried up beach, crowds swarming round. SCU Roger Le Morvan shaving. SCU Margaret Feather of GB. CU Dr Brewster of GB. Others being greased, various shots, males & females. Competitors all line up on beach, flares burning all the time. Competitors walk down to beach & enter water, GV of the start at 2.30 am. Mix Le Morvan swimming in Channel. Rehim swimming strongly. MS Eileen Fenton of GB swimming. Aboard launch. SCU M Mussche of Belgium. M Pique of France, being massaged. CU M Olsen. Rehim swims with cliffs of Dover in background (bad neg). Rehim stumbles ashore at Dover (bad neg). Cut-in crowds on beach. Rehim walks along beach with wrap on him. Eileen Fenton carried off launch up quay steps wrapped in blankets. CU Miss Fenton speaking on her swim. Crowds. Rehim speaking about the swim. Crowd shot to finish.
