Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Hoffman Conference. DESCRIPTION: Mr Douglas was present when Mr Hoffman, the Marshall Aid Administer for Europe, had words of advice and explanation to give us in his farewell press conference in London before returning to the States. SHOTLIST: MCU of Mr Douglas seated at table while Mr Hoffman stands and talks. Panning shot of people listening to him. CU of Mr Hoffman talking "British manufactures have not yet began to take the huge reservoir of America buying power. It is a very large market. In 1948 its gross national product was 254 billion dollars, just 1% more of that sum spent on British goods, 1% of a dollar gap can be closed. Since I have left the States, a good deal has been printed about criticism in America towards Britain and in Britain towards America. We all know that such mutual criticism occasionally occurs between friends. If there is a little more heat and criticism now than usual, it reflects concern not hostility either way. On the part of the overwhelming majority of American and British citizens it need no way deter us from getting on with the job on both sides of the Atlantic. We know that our countries and commonwealth must stand together and work together and stick together along with all the 3 nations, if we are to realise our hope for economic success and lasting peace for the world."
