Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Nimbus Wins the 1949 Derby. DESCRIPTION: At Epsom about a million people went to see the 170th running of the Derby. The Queen, accompanied by Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip were there early and watched the runners being paraded. After a terrific finish Nimbus won, with Amour Drake second and Swallow Tail third. The result was only decided after a photo-finish, the first photo-finish in the history of the Derby. SHOTLIST: KS. Montage - GV grandstand, field-glasses superimposed over same, horses racing in field-glasses, words appear in the field-glasses "The Derby", field-glasses slightly zoom. GV racecourse with grandstand in background. MS ditto. SV GV crowds at finishing post. GV The Hill. SV GV from Tattenham Corner of crowds with grandstand in background. Royal car drives up, Duke alights, Princess Elizabeth alights, the Queen last, shake hands with Lord Rosebery in opposite order. MS & CU Queen’s Standard flying. GV Royal Box. Royal party walk along to paddock - including Princess Alice and Earl of Athlone. SCU Princess Elizabeth & Duke. Several shots of horses parading in paddock. MS many toppers being worn. Aly Khan & Rita Hayworth watch horse parade. MS Princess Elizabeth wagging her head from side to side, as though horses are running past her. Elevated GV grandstand. Gordon Richards on "Royal Forest". MS Royal Box with party looking through glasses. MS start of race. LS horses running into camera. Elevated GV camera swings with horses out in the country. Cut-in crowds stretching their necks to get a look. More of the swing. Into camera elevated shot, rounding Tattenham Corner. Elevated GV horses coming up straight & finish. Despondent gesture by Princess Elizabeth. Repeat of finish (into camera shot) shows how "Amour Drake" switching to the rails behind "Nimbus" & "Swallow Tail", this costing him the race. Mrs Glennister, the owner leads "Nimbus" into unsaddling. C Elliott up. Crowds round same. CU horse’s (Nimbus) head to finish.
