- MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Funeral of Mahatma Gandhi. DESCRIPTION: The funeral of Mahatma Gandhi took place on the banks of the river Jumna. Hundreds of thousands, from all walks of life, assembled for the ceremony. SHOTLIST: CUT STORY: KS Out of camera - Lancers along street towards India’s Archway in background. SCU Indian soldier on guard. Elevated shot crowds assembled outside Birla House, in the grounds. LS Gandhi’s body on balcony. MS-SCU Gandhi’s body lying on balcony. Cut-ins crowds, grief stricken in crowds. Elevated shot (against light) beginning of procession through streets, led by Bengal Lancers, RAF, Navy and Army troops pull bier. Crowds flock around same. Huge crowds assembled along route, various shots. Bier passing through dense crowds, on bier are Pandit Nehru, Sardar Patel, Sardar Baldev Singh, Acharya Kripalani. Elevated LS crowds following. MS Lord and Lady Mountbatten (and daughters), with Lord and Lady Brabourne walking towards Ghat. Huge crowds following the cortege. At the Ghat, huge crowds around where Gandhi lies. Police with truncheons try to keep crowd back. SCU Gandhi on pyre. Various shots of cremation, crowds surge around. MS blazing pyre, mixing to ashes left. MS Lord and Lady Mountbatten and others during burning, seated on ground. Ghat encircled with barbed wire, public walk past. Inside circle followers throw themselves on ground and kiss same. MS ashes on funeral pyre, shows priests sorting amongst the ashes for remains of Gandhi’s bones. Mix to GV Jumna River.
