Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: UNO Continues. DESCRIPTION: The work of the first meeting of the General Assembly of the United Nations continued with the election of the non-permanent members of the Security Council. A general debate followed the elections, a highlight of which was the address by James Byrnes. SHOTLIST: KS CU Nations emblems. Elevated shot of crowded hall. General views of delegates in hall. MS Ukraine delegates. Mr Gromyko takes rostrum, proposes postponement of election of Non-Permanent Members for Security Council. Byrnes takes rostrum, opposes suggestion, Fraser supports motion. Bevin opposes Gromyko, USSR. GV during ballot, SV of same. Result of voting being Brazil, Egypt, Mexico, Poland and Holland. Various shots of hall, interpreter announces result for 6th membership between Canada and Australia, the latter winning. Byrnes takes the rostrum, MS & SCU of him during speech says "Twenty five years ago we in the United States were not fully aware of our responsibility, but with others we have learned from experience. This time, both the United States Government and it’s people are deeply conscious of their responsibility. This time on their behalf I pledge full and whole hearted co-operation". Please note very good elevated shots of delegates seated, also shot taken from above the chandelier looking down on the delegates. Cut-in shot Bevin talking (silent) with Ellen Wilkinson.
