Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Epic of USS "Franklin". DESCRIPTION: The American aircraft carrier sustained a direct hit from Japanese bombers. Petrol tanks exploded, planes below deck caught fire and ammunition exploded. The crew fought to save the ship, quelling the fires and evacuating the wounded. 832 men lost their lives, 270 were wounded but the ship survived to limp back to New York. SHOTLIST: Cut story - KS. GV of aircraft carrier. Various shots of Corsairs & Helldivers taking off from flight deck. CU Captain Gehres, who says "just after seven o’clock in the morning two Jap bombers appeared out of the clouds & bombed us", mix to aircraft carrier receiving direct hits. Several explosions, from various angles. On board carrier crew fight the fires, wounded lie about the flight deck, tended by medics, padre on knees leaning over seriously wounded sailor. More shots & explosions & fires burning; carrier had started to list badly. Destroyer Santa Fe playing water onto fires aboard the carrier. GV of listing carrier, bows of destroyer "Hickock" alongside of carrier, some of the "Franklin" crew cut off by the fires, jump onto the deck of destroyer, one falls into sea, various shots of rescues from the sea, sailors on rafts, being pulled out of water. GV of "Franklin" ablaze mix to GV of carrier with fires quelled, & under way, steaming for New York. Map of Pacific shows route taken, 13,000 miles. The "Franklin" being hit 60 miles off the Jap coast. "Franklin" steaming past the Statue of Liberty, also passing Manhattan sky-scrapers in background. "Franklin" at anchor. CU Stars & Stripes flying aboard ship to finish.
