Summary
MOVIETONE CARD TITLE: Into Westphalia. DESCRIPTION: After his crossing of the Rhine Winston Churchill received a great welcome from the troops. The fighting around Wesel, scene of paratroop landings, had been fierce, but objectives had been taken and the move forward continued. In towns and villages which had been over-run troops were kept busy dealing with German civilians. In one town they began looting a warehouse which was full of food left behind by the German army, but the Americans soon put a stop to it. SHOTLIST: Cut story - KS. AFU - GV Wesel ruins through circular window. Churchill in Buffalo crosses Rhine, also with him is General Dempsey. Buffalo passes crowds of soldiers on bank of river, who cheer etc. Churchill acknowledges cheers. AFU - British Commandos make their way over rubble, through ruins of Wesel, over fields, round bomb craters. Pass through wooded area. British Commandos search houses etc. Aerial shot of tens of hundreds of American paratroops dropping - SPECIAL - Best ever received. AFU - On ground, GV of American & British Commandos link-up, chatting with one another. Various shots of gliders scattered about fields. Glider troops march along streets, also jeeps towing small artillery following. Bridge across river Yssel, shows British troops along banks, running across bridge. In German village, civilians congregate in main square with belongings. AFU - German POWs marched through. At Nauheim, Germans loot warehouse with foodstuffs left by Germany Army, taking same away in dogcarts, barrows etc., few turned back by GIs. At Schwanheim, German civilians hand over their radios, & small arms, at main square; read proclamation (Allied) pasted on walls. On a country road, lines of wrecked German vehicles, transport, etc., which had tried to escape from the Allies. AFU - Elevated shot of German POWs, marched through Wesel. German POWs off amphibious craft after crossing Rhine, also line of POWs six deep march through streets.
