Summary
Pathe synopsis: Rome - but not the tourists’ Rome. See the shimmering new buildings, built to look as the Coliseum and the Forum looked when they were white and fresh. Then slink away to the real, terracotta Rome with its narrow streets and life in the open-air. We take the lid off the hidden city of bicycle thieves. The flea-market and Trastevere where ritzy restaurants back onto some doss houses across a sleazy street that separates the eating area from the kitchens. We go to Rome’s Lido, sweaty rather than elegant, and we wind up in the village street which is what the chic Via Veneto becomes every night when the authentic Romans gather together to make it into the place where they all go for a walk.
