- Summary
- Pathe synopsis: Follow the footsteps of hip-swinging girls through streets of sunshine. Follow the bands and join the dance because it’s carnival time in San Remo, a winter carnival with a touch of summer madness. Yes, this is winter, in the Mediterranean manner. Sleek yachts and their crews needn’t wait patiently for May - they can sail out into the bay today; or wander ashore and taste the delicacy of San Remo - Sardinara. Let’s take a slice of history as well, history that dates back many centuries. The old town of San Remo, a confusion of towering grey stone buildings and dark, forbidding alleys where a funicular view is one of tradition and modernity rising side by side. Your train ride means swaying over a stairway of fields to an almost English landscape of golfing greenery. Almost, but not quite, for there’s mimosa dancing in the breeze and not far away the ruined city of Bussana, struck suddenly by an earthquake. You can still walk through its cracked alleyways. It’s all part of San Remo, a town where a luxury flat can cost up to £50,000, where in any field or glass house you’ll see the hand of experience sewing another seedling of prosperity. For this is carnation country and every inch of soil on the sheltered hills is eagerly prized. But, remember that carnival invitation? Then come along with us.
