Formerly an excellent guide to web sites on the humanities, with helpful but not overwordy site descriptions and useful background material. It also integrates search results with results from the database of the North West Film Archive, an innovative and very welcome initative. NB Intute closed in July 2011 and the site has now been archived. No further resources are being added and no changes are being made to existing content, so the resource will increasingly become less useful and reliable.

History is for the most part interpreted as conflict here and features information on films depicting the Vietnam War (Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Hamburger Hill), the second World War (The Great Escape, Saving Private Ryan, Patton, Bridge on the River Kwai), The American Civil War (Gone With The Wind, Gettysburg) as well as coverage of films and tv dramas set in Ancient Rome (I, Claudius, Cleopatra, Spartacus). It provides plot and episode summaries and compares the dramas against historical records with useful timelines and other materials.

Previously known as the Learning Curve, this is a free online teaching and learning resource, following the History National Curriculum from Key Stages 2 to 5. It includes documents, photos and film clips. These can be searched under a variety of headings, such as The Cold War, Early 20th Century Kent, Home Front 1939-1945 and others. These can be viewed either in Windows Media Player or QuickTime or both. The moving image holdings, which are made up predominantly of news items, are not insubstantial and can be searched by keywords using simple Boolean search terms. The encoding is usually of acceptable standard, although some material is poor with little or no contextual information to support it, although in some cases they have built in to pre-prepared lesson plans for teachers.

A number of ‘alternative’ animations commenting on American politics and news stories can be found on this site, courtesy of American brothers Gregg and Evan Spririndellis, including the popular This Land which satirised both Kerry and Bush during the 2004 US Presidential elections. The site now produces only annual reviews of such stories and concentrates on selling ecards and personalised animations.

This fascinating resource is dedicated to reviewing international classic and cult movies on DVD, staying for the most part well clear of mainstream English-language films. Apart from essays and reviews and information on forthcoming releases, its most prominent feature is its evaluation of the technical audio and visual content of various DVD versions of films from around the world. The site looks at thousands of feature films and provides high resolution frame grabs to compare the visual quality of titles released in different territories, as well as comments on the audio presentation and the extras included. A dedicated Blu-ray microsite is particularly valuable.

This site advertises itself as the "definitive directory of UK TV advert soundtracks". This comprehensive listing of over 2000 pieces of music used in recent television advertising can be searched chronologically (only as far back as 1996 though), by song title, artist as well as company or specific ad campaign. The site is linked throughout to Amazon.co.uk which often includes thirty-second clips in Real and Windows Media Player formats. There is also a forum. Inactive since November 29 2008.
