    Launched in 2015 around 2,500 films preserved by the BFI National Archive including home movies, documentaries and news footage from Victorian times to the 1980s are available online via BFI Player. Films of interest include what is believed to be the first surveillance footage shot in 1935 to entrap an illegal betting ring, and the first film to be used as evidence in a British court of law. There are also 1960s documentaries aimed at a Middle Eastern audience showing happy and engaged Muslim communities in Manchester and Cardiff – the message being, please come and live in the UK. What are believed to be the earliest surviving home movies, from 1902, are also hosted. Films can be searched by location, decade, or subject headings such as terraced houses, castles and street scenes.

    This research series, organised by Royal Holloway, University of London, School of Modern Languages, uses different formats – lectures, seminars, round tables, workshops, podcasts – to explore the notion of trauma across a wide chronological range. Podcasts include Dr Cecile Bishop talking on ‘The Truth About Amin: History and Fiction in Filmic Portrayals of Idi Amin’; Helen Vassall on ‘The Day Nina Simone Stopped Singing: Gender, War and Trauma’ and Marina Warner speaking on '"What’s Hercules to Him?" Terror, Pity and the Matter of Troy (from Homer to Alice Oswald). The site is clear and easy to use and the summary of content full and informative.

    A website offering a podcasts with an emphasis on military history. Topics include gas warfare in World War I, the Siege of Yorktown, and the Battle of Blenheim. Past seasons of podcasts can be downloaded for a small fee. The podcasts are also hosted on iTunes.     The Conservative Party Archive, held at the Bodlean Libraries, University of Oxford, holds a small but growing audiovisual collection, in a variety of formats ranging from gramophone recordings of Stanley Baldwin’s speech at an election rally in 1928 to WebCameron footage on Mini-DV tapes following David Cameron’s progress during the 2010 General Election campaign. The majority of the collection consists of recordings of annual Conservative Party conferences and party political broadcasts. A more complete collection of both of these can be found at the BFI National Archive, which also holds copies of early films produced by the Conservative & Unionist Films Association from the 1930s-1940s. The Archive holds a large quantity of personal papers, manuscripts, photographs, records and speech transcripts.

    A website that provides a chronological flow of events that lead to the development of television. It is focused on hardware, not television programmes, or programming, or how television influences lives. There is some programme information on the site relating to the ‘first’ shows, and how they were discussed in TV Guide. The majority of information on the site relates to American television. The Collections pages list individuals and organisations from around the world with their own websites and collections; a warning that several links are broken.

    The Irish Film Archive acquires, preserves and makes available Ireland’s moving image heritage. The collection is broad, aiming to reflect all aspects of indigenous film production, whether professional or amateur. It incorporates fiction, features, public information films, amateur material, documentary, newsreel, experimental film and animation. The Archive maintains a research library covering all aspects of Irish and international cinema and a Paper Collection providing primary research material on the history of Irish film. It organises film screenings courses and lectures. A small number of podcasts related to discussions of Irish cinema are streamed.

    Podcasts which aim to further the study of Shakespeare and the Renaissance. Includes the rapidly growing audio series SHAKESPEARE UNLIMITED where scholars talk on a range of topics including translating Shakespeare, Shakespeare and music and Shakespearean comedy. The Folger Audio Editions are studio recordings, produced by the Folger Theatre, from the complete, unabridged texts of the Folger Editions and performed by leading Shakespearean actors. The site also hosts podcasts from 2010 to date of Shakespeare’s Birthday Lectures where scholars again lecture on a wide range of topics.
