2,4-Dinitrohenol

- Podcast from the Royal Society of Chemistry’s online journal Chemistry World. Simon Cotton investigates 2,4-dinitrophal, an explosive nitro-compound. In the early 1930s, a team of researchers at Stanford University studied the effect of DNP on human metabolism. It was found that moderate doses of DNP produced a 50% increase in metabolic rate and it was soon used in diet pills. The compound was shown to have severe side effects with some fatalities. The drug is still obtainable on the internet and there is as yet is no antidote to DHP poisoning.
