Synopsis
Examines the following aspects of acquiring skills: 1) classification of motor skills - muscular effort (find and gross motor skills), type of movement (discrete, serial and continuous skills) and environment (closed and open skills); 2) learning a physicsl skill - three types of learning (cognitive, affective, effective), stages of motor skill learning (cognitive, associative and autonomous); 3) stages of processing a skill - input (exteroceptive and proprioceptive information), processing (stimulus identification, response selection, response programming (reaction time, stimulus-response compatibility and short/long-term memory), output, feedbck (internal and external); 4) practising a physical skill - skill learning during practice (whole, part and progressive), the organisation of practice - random and blocked scheduling, structure (massed and distributed), length and intervals between practice sessions, variability of practice, mental versus physical practice.
