Between the Tides

Synopsis
In 1997 the Environment and Heritage Service in Northern Ireland joined forces with a team of marine archaeologists from the University of Ulster to undertake a five-year study of the archaeology of Strangford Lough - a strongly tidal sea-lough that is is an important marine nature reserve with an ancient heritage that holds evidence of human habitation going back 8000 years. Made towards the end of the survey, the programme looks at some of the sites - the castles, raths, churches and monasteries are well-known. Others, such as the seashell middens, the stone tidal fish-traps, the kelp grids, the hut circles and the tiny harbours and quays now falling into disrepair are much less so.
