Management Styles II
- Synopsis
- Textbooks speak of three management styles - autocratic, democratic and laisez faire, but how neatly do people fit into these categories? Four case studies show what happens in the real world. 1) Angel or devil - a notoriously autocratic manager has found religion. When his assistant comes in late he forgives him, but then his patience snaps. 2) Limits of democracy - A manager prides himself on being open-minded, listening to the staff and involving them in decision-making. But if they show initiative he gets heavy. 3) Honest tyrant - A manager lays down the law in a heavy-handed way, but she’s honest and looks after her people. 4) The invisible manager - a manager makes much of ‘empowering’ his staff but in reality he leaves them to sink or swim. When vital decisions are to be made he keeps out of the way.
