Fast Reactor Fuel Cycle

Synopsis
In August 1982 at the prototype fast reactor, Dounreay, new fuel assemblies, containing plutonium originally created in this reactor, were loaded into the reactor core for the first time. This marked the completion of a fuel cycle, during which newly created plutonium is recovered by reprocessing, then fabricated into the new fuel before being put back into the reactor. Explains in detail the thermal and fast reactor fuel cycles, the physics of the subject and the practical operation of the prototype fast reactor, and its reprocessing plant and new fuel fabrication plant.
