Environmental Control in the North Sea
- Synopsis
- Looks at waste and water management aboard a North Sea oil platform. Considers not just the inevitable solid and liquid wastes of the accommodation for several hundred workers, but the complex industrial wastes and effluent that has to be treated. The platform uses diesel oil and natural gas to fuel two powerful and noisy jet-turbine engines. Noise protection for the workers is provided by sound-insulated refuges and ear defenders. Safety and fire control are also vital elements in managing the platform. Also deals with environmental impact assessment of an oil terminal in the Orkney Islands. Professor Cliff Johnston shows samples of crude oil in the laboratory and discusses the use of scallops as highly sensitive natural pollution indicators in the marine environs of an oil terminal.

- NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
