Tesco Promise, The

Synopsis
Uses Tesco as a case study to demonstrate retail store design and packaging design in a grocery multiple. Features Tesco’s corporate image; considers the various sensory stimuli which influence consumer behaviour and puts forward the hypothesis that there is a Tesco promise. The promise is - goodness, variety and quality; uses breakfast cereals and canned foods to demonstrate the merchandising of branded and own-label goods and shows how personal service is also built into the store. Ends by posing questions about the design of grocery stores in the 1990s to take account of changes in technology and ways of life.
