Savage Skies

Synopsis
Series examining extreme weather conditions and their effects, using footage taken by those caught up on the events and their first-hand accounts.
1) Thunderhead clouds, thunderstorms, ‘lightning bullets’ in America, flash floods in Lynmouth in Devon, giant hailstones, devastating winds that can knock planes from the sky.
2) Tornadoes and lightning bolts, and people who chase tornados. Includes footage of a tornado that went through Wichita, Kansas, in 1991.
3) The destructive power of hurricanes, with footage of Hurricane Andrew, which devastated Florida in August 1992. Shows how the behaviour of the skies is linked to the seas. Tells of families whose homes wewre ripped from over their heads and asks if Britain’s October 1987 storm was really a hurricane.
4) Archive footage and eye-witness reports recall stories of record snowfalls, blizzards, and Britain’s big freeze in 1962-63. Shows Oimyakon, Siberia, the coldest town on earth; surviving blizzards in Scotland’s Cairngorm mountains; snowfalls in Buffalo, New York.
