Sandal Castle: Excavation of a Medieval Moat

Synopsis
A short history of the site explains how the castle moat was used as a rubbish dump from the time it was built in the twelfth century until the castle was destroyed during the Civil War in 1645. Shows the process of excavation and introduces general techniques of archaeological organisation and method. Field disciplines illustrated include open excavation of the moat and a major modification of the technique is explained. Surveying methods, photography, handling of finds and trowelling are shown on site and the film ends with a short examination of conservation and classification of excavated material.
