Principles and Mathematics of Ship Stability
- Synopsis
- Discusses the transverse and longitudinal stability of ships, using a mixture of graphics, tank model demonstrations and footage of real ship at sea and in port. Stability is governed by the internal positions of the ship’s metacentre, centre of gravity, centre of buoyancy, and centre of flotation. The position and type of the ship’s loads, stores and ballast, its speed and hull form all influence these positions. Externally, wind, waves and water density also change the forces acting on the vessel, and any imbalance of loads longitudinally can lead to excessive structural stresses on the hull. The programe shows how these forces and the countermeasures can be calculated.
