Oesophageal Varices

Synopsis
Oesophageal varices are caused by an obstruction in portal blood flow; this is usually cirrhosis of the liver. The rupture or ulceration of these varices is at the root of extremely serious complications, such as digestive haemorrhages. The film describes the mechanism of the cause of oesophageal varices and the medical treatment of bleeding: surgical treatment is briefly touched upon.*
