- Description
- The Foreign Ministry in Baghdad has asked UK Labour MP Tony Benn to defer his visit to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein by one week. Benn hopes to persuade the Iraqi President to release British hostages; he will take a message from Nelson Mandela, stating that the African National Congress supports any efforts to avert a war. Benn refers to the mission of former UK Prime Minister Edward Heath, which suffered the same setback but ended in securing the release of hostages. Telephone interview.
