Description
Simon Israel interviews John Ward, father of Julie Ward, the British photographer who was killed in the Masai Mara game reserve in 1988 while on safari. The interview comes as the verdict in the murder case is to be delivered in Nairobi. Two park rangers, Jonah Magiroi and Peter Kipeen, are on trial but now it seems likely they will be freed. According to Kenyan law, before a final verdict is reached by a judge, a case is first deliberated by a team of assessors. In this case the assessors say the two rangers are innocent and three other suspects should have been charged – it seems likely the judge will agree with the assessment. It is a blow for John Ward, but he says that he will not be surprised if the defendants are acquitted.
