Description
DOWN TO EARTH NO.4 [Series RADIO VICTORY ARCHIVE] One of a series of gardening programmes on Radio Victory, called Down to Earth. Presented by DAVE CARSON. TRACK 1- In - Good evening and welcome ... Talking to SUE PHILLIPS about longterm planning in the garden. In new garden [often small] best to look for quick growing plants [people often don’t stay many years in first house]. First thing needed is a lawn. Seed cheapest - can do this in autumn. In summer can make patio. Climbers good for fences. Island beds for flowers planted with small shrubs and herbaceous plants. Trees should be small - some conifers suitable. Aim to bring countryside into garden. Ponds look good. Avoid formality, let garden show changing seasons. Only worth buying expensive plants if going to stay in house for a long time. Out - ... we re going to take a break. TRACK 2- In - It’s Down to Earth ... Dealing with lawns drying out in summer. Talks about lawn repair kits and how often lawns should be cut in summer and how high. Don’t put fertilisers on lawn that actually is going brown because it needs water. Potatoes - how to check if they are ready ... Other crops suitable for sowing in July. Suggests more unusual crops - endive, chicory, swiss chard, chinese cabbage, other Chinese vegetables. Advice on putting pond into garden. Out - ... bye for now, bye bye. [Box 11]
