Play synopsis: Set in Prague, 1911. A dramatisation of the playwright’s ideas about life and death. The young man Albert Gregor is repelled but also fascinated by a singer with the initials E.M. The woman Emilia offers the Macropulos secret to people who have been plotting to obtain it. Impelled by unseen forces, each is forced to reject her offer.
Production history: First performed on 21 November 1922 in the Vinohrady Theatre in Prague. Produced at the Arts Theatre in London, under the name The Macropulos Secret, on 8 July 1930.
