- Summary
- The March of Time synopsis: Of universal appeal is an item in the current issue of the March of Time - "Dogs for Sale". It describes the vast new industry created by America’s 15,000,000 dog-owners, who spend £120,000,000 yearly on supplies and luxuries for their pets. Amusing scenes of dogs elaborately cared for in luxurious salons, however, serve as an introduction to a more important aspect of dog life - the activities of "The Seeing Eye" at Morristown, New Jersey, the famous school where intelligent dogs are trained to guide the blind. These dogs, most of them Shepherds, spend three months under the direction of professional trainers before they are assigned to their masters, with whom they undergo a further month’s training. The camera records step by step the growth of understanding between dog and blind master until at last they become a self-sufficient and independent unit. We are told of the introduction of a bill in Congress, inspired by Dr. Henry Claus, blind owner of a "Seeing Eye" dog, proposing to grant extensive privileges to the blind and their dogs on public conveyances, and in public places where in the past dogs of any kind have been strictly prohibited.
