Summary
The March of Time synopsis: The new issue of the March of Time contains a topical episode entitled "Railroad Renaissance" dramatising the efforts of the American railway companies to combat the remarkable depression and powerful competition which has decreased their business by two thirds in the past twelve years. In a retrospective survey of the railway industry through fifty years the March of Time attributes this decline to pre-war abuse of the private monopoly held by the companies, and to post-war disregard of competitive road and air travel. Pictured is the railway’s decision to co-operate in a scheme for regaining lost business and prestige by drastic economies, modernised rolling stock, and the publicising of novel services. The March of Time summarising the situation, points out that the future of the railways today depends on public response to the recent reduction of fares to 1d. a mile with a charge of 1/2d more for Pullman passengers.
