Rhodesian Spotlight Commentary - History was made recently at the first Passing-out Parade of the Federation’s National Servicemen at "Llewellin Barracks". Four and a half months ago these men arrived at the Barracks on that same stretch of tarmac which once vibrated to the roar of RAF Training Planes. The National Service Depot opened on the first of October 1955, the purpose being to train all of the Territorial Force in recruit training prior to being posted to T. F. units in the Federation. After being sworn in, the trainees receive their kit and are assigned to barracks. The call-up takes in Europeans, Coloureds, Asiatics, and Euro-Africans throughout the Federation.
After their 137 days of continuous instruction, they will be posted to their home units where they will undergo further training. Urban recruits will receive a further three years of training which consists of 40 hours a year and a camp of 14 days, and rural trainees will have camps for 21 days a year for three years.
Gymnastics play an important part in the course, and highly qualified instructors see to it that every man who passes under their hands is at the peak of physical condition.
After their many hours on the training grounds, the men have a variety of recreational facilities available to them ... But finally, the great day arrives when they graduate ... uniform are readied, buttons are polished to perfection, and at last they take their places at the Passing Out Parade.
Lord Llewellin, Governor General of the Federation and Commander in Chief, inspected the men at this historic first Passing-out Parade. After the inspection "A" Company, and number ten platoon of "D" Company, who constituted the 180 men passing out, marched past in slow time. With this, the First practical results of the National Service Training course at Llewellin Barracks a great milestone has been reached in the Federation’s defenses.
