Rhodesian Spotlight Commentary - Operations are going ahead at full speed at Kariba Gorge in spite of the ever present threat of summer flooding. The access tunnel to the site of the main tunnel has been constrcuted at record pace. The main tunnel will eventually help to take the flood flow of the Zambezi and represents a major engineering undertaking. Work in the tunnels in going on day and night in ceaseless shifts, in conditions of extreme heat and humidity.
Quite unpredictable, a landslide threatened to cut off a roadway and the site of the project’s present generating and compressed air equipment, but this has be now been cleared and no serious setback was experienced. Since the rising flood waters of early December washed away the pontoon bridge, the only means of crossing the river has been by a cableway suspended above the water. Attempts are being made to build a pier which will enable workers to get to the columns which have been erected to support the temporary bridge, and here again the flood waters have been responsible for much uphill work. Many tons of rock and sand have been washed downstream.
These difficulties, however, are comparatively small, and must be expected on a project as vast as Kariba. The overall impression is one of great progress in the face of natural hazards. - Keywords
