Summary
Rhodesian Spotlight synopsis: A visit to the new Northern Rhodesian Police Training depot at Lilayi where the Governor, Sir Arthur Benson attends the first Passing Out Parade.
Rhodesian Spotlight Commentary - Spotlight pays a visit to the new Northern Rhodesian Police Training centre at Lilayi.
Courses at Lilayi cater for the training of European officers as well as Africans, both trained and disciplined with the same meticulous care.
Sixteen cadet officers took the first course at Lilayi, being groomed on the parade ground and in the lecture room for the many complex duties they will later perform. The procedures of police work are precise and exact. Both the facilities and buildings at Lilayi are a great improvement on anything that existed previously from the point of view of both convenience and comfort. At the same time there are first class amenities for the African trainees.
Spit and polish was the order of the day for the depot’s first passing out parade. This important occassion was attended by His Excellency the Governor of Northern Rhodesia, Sir Arthur Benson. With considerable pride the parade was reported all correct for inspection, which His Excellency then carried out. The turn out was flawless, as indeed, could be expected.
The Africans’ bearing and steadiness too were exemplary, a tribute to their training over the past few months. And so some 150 recruits passed into a force, which in Sir Arthur Benson’s own words, "has a fine and great name, not only in Northern Rhodesia, but wherever there is British Rule."
