- NoS synopsis: 17-year-old Marian, daughter of a Westoe miner, is one of Britain’s top gymnasts
NCB Commentary - Westoe Colliery, and a proud miner father’s off shift and on his way home.
There he’ll find Marian, 17 years old but already one of Britain’s top gymnasts - North East Senior Champion.
Marian still goes back to school - to work in the office part-time, and to help train up and coming youngsters in the gym.
This is Birtly South Modern, and Marian has an enthusiastic group of budding gymnasts eager to get the benefit of her training. Youngsters today are taking up gymnastics in a big way and the school’s instructor Bill Chapman works closely with Marian in the training sessions. So does Mary Younger, the schools instructress when it’s the girls’ turn.
Then, after school hours are over, it’s Marian’s turn to have the gym to herself. She trains ten hours a week, to defend her title and prepare for the honours that may lie ahead.
Marian checks it all over with her trainer, Daisy Pattison, who taught her gym at school and who, with Marian’s mother and father, is looking ahead to the places Marian is boung to go. - Keywords
