Summary
BFI synopsis: Soviet mining delegation visits the Midlands. The Russain Mining Delegation visit the East and West Midlands.
NCB Commentary - The Midlands in their turn were visited by the Russian Mining Delegation recently in Britain. At Littleton Colliery a Russian-speaking miner talks to the delegation in the Pit Yard before they go on to inspect the Pithead Minecar handling Circuit, among the most modern in the division.
At Calverton in the East Midlands the delegation gave a thorough going over to the recently completed Pit and paid especial attention to the modern Coal Preparation plant.
At Thoresby, where there is more face mechanisation than anywhere else in the country, the Russian delegation climbed into pit clothes to watch a Meco-Moore Cutter-Loader in action on one of the faces.
A big range of mining equipment on the surface was shown to the party at No. 1 Area Central Workshops.
Travelling by road, the delegation saw a good deal of the English countryside and at Coventry they took time to walk through the newly constructed Civic Centre in this once bomb-chattered City.
Outside Coventry new mineworkers houses were the subject of close interest by the delegation, and local children came in for their share of adulation.
On the lighter side the delegation attended a performance at Stratford-on-Avon’s Memorial Theatre. The memories of Britain which they have taken back to Russia have not been confined to the Mining industry.
